Union Pacific 4141 is a one-of-a-kind locomotive dedicated to honoring George H. W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States. This EMD SD70ACe diesel locomotive features a design inspired by Air Force One, complete with “George Bush 41” lettering, making it a powerful tribute to Bush’s legacy.
Unveiled on October 18, 2005, at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, UP 4141 began its service in grand style. President Bush himself even operated the locomotive briefly, highlighting its personal significance. The locomotive’s fiberglass door, crafted by Formcrete Fiberglass Products, further exemplifies the attention to detail in its construction. After a brief service life, it was placed in storage in 2009 during the economic downturn.
In December 2018, UP 4141 took center stage again, leading President Bush’s funeral train from Spring to College Station, Texas. This historic moment solidified its place in both rail and presidential history. Following the funeral, the locomotive embarked on a nationwide tour, visiting cities across the Union Pacific network.
In 2019, Union Pacific donated UP 4141 to the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library, where it made its final journey to Texas before being prepped for permanent display. On March 12, 2021, it arrived at its new home, and in June 2024, the Marine One/4141 Locomotive Pavilion was opened to commemorate Bush’s 100th birthday.
Today, UP 4141 stands as a lasting tribute to President Bush, celebrating his life, service, and love for railroads. Visitors can see it on display at the Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.
